R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Porter Middle School is celebrating 50 years of
  service to the students of south Austin in 2007, and this milestone
  offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this esteemed
  institution in the life of the community; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 1957 as Porter Junior High, the
  facility was named in honor of Thomas Neal Porter, who served as
  chief financial officer of the Austin Independent School District
  for many years; and
         WHEREAS, The institution opened its doors to 900 students and
  30 teachers in its first year, and through the decades enrollment
  swelled to nearly 1,200 at its peak; and
         WHEREAS, Porter is one of the oldest campuses in south
  Austin, and it has undergone a number of changes since its founding;
  the junior high became a middle school in 1988, and the fall of 2007
  will bring more changes, as Porter becomes the Ann Richards Academy
  of Young Women Leaders; and
         WHEREAS, For half a century, Porter has equipped students for
  the challenges of high school while helping to shape tomorrow's
  leaders, and all those associated with this enduring institution,
  past and present, can take pride in its rich history; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Porter Middle School on the 50th
  anniversary of its founding and extend to all those associated with
  the school sincere best wishes for continued success in all their
  endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Porter Middle School as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
