R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Porter Middle School is celebrating 50 years of |
|
service to the students of south Austin in 2007, and this milestone |
|
offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this esteemed |
|
institution in the life of the community; and |
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1957 as Porter Junior High, the |
|
facility was named in honor of Thomas Neal Porter, who served as |
|
chief financial officer of the Austin Independent School District |
|
for many years; and |
|
WHEREAS, The institution opened its doors to 900 students and |
|
30 teachers in its first year, and through the decades enrollment |
|
swelled to nearly 1,200 at its peak; and |
|
WHEREAS, Porter is one of the oldest campuses in south |
|
Austin, and it has undergone a number of changes since its founding; |
|
the junior high became a middle school in 1988, and the fall of 2007 |
|
will bring more changes, as Porter becomes the Ann Richards Academy |
|
of Young Women Leaders; and |
|
WHEREAS, For half a century, Porter has equipped students for |
|
the challenges of high school while helping to shape tomorrow's |
|
leaders, and all those associated with this enduring institution, |
|
past and present, can take pride in its rich history; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Porter Middle School on the 50th |
|
anniversary of its founding and extend to all those associated with |
|
the school sincere best wishes for continued success in all their |
|
endeavors; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Porter Middle School as an expression of high regard by |
|
the Texas House of Representatives. |
