R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, March 13, 2007, marked a very special occasion for
  Maria Lemus Trevino of Falfurrias, for on that day she celebrated
  her 97th birthday; and
         WHEREAS, Born at the stroke of midnight on March 13, 1910, the
  former Maria De Los Remedios Eduvijes Guzman Lemus moved with her
  parents, Mauricio and Carlota Lemus, to South Texas in 1923; she
  worked alongside them at several area ranches while she attended
  school and later spent eight years working for a local doctor; and
         WHEREAS, She married Florentino Galindo Trevino on December
  29, 1935, embracing her role as stepmother to his six children, and
  in the years that followed, the couple became the parents of nine
  more; Mrs. Trevino helped support her family as an insurance agent
  for the Howard-Williams Funeral Home for more than two decades, and
  in exchange for her children's education, she served as a cook and
  driver for the Ursuline nuns at Sacred Heart Parochial School; in
  1960, she and her husband opened the Heart's Delight Food Store,
  which they operated for more than 30 years; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to her busy home and work life, Mrs.
  Trevino made time to participate in civic affairs, serving as chair
  of Brooks County Precinct 1; in the early 1950s, she was appointed
  presiding election judge for the precinct, a position she held for
  many years, and she later served as chair of the Democratic Party
  for Brooks County; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed woman also shared her time as a member
  of the Brooks County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and as the first
  Eucharistic minister at the hospital and the Canterbury Villa
  Nursing Home, where, along with the local senior citizens activity
  center, she continues to offer communion today; known as the
  "Mother Teresa of Falfurrias," she regularly visits the sick and
  elderly and brings communion to homebound Catholics on Sundays; in
  2002, she received the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Jefferson
  Volunteer Award for her community involvement and her service as a
  Eucharistic minister for Sacred Heart Catholic Church; moreover,
  she is a founding member of the Monday Night Rosary Crusade and
  often hosts the rosary at her home; and
         WHEREAS, A widow for more than a decade, Mrs. Trevino is the
  cherished matriarch of a large family that includes her surviving
  eight children and two stepchildren, along with 29 grandchildren
  and more than 40 great-grandchildren; she continues to drive and
  manage her household and credits her health and longevity to her
  strong faith and her penchant for eating chili peppers with every
  meal; and
         WHEREAS, Maria Lemus Trevino has significantly contributed
  to the quality of life in Falfurrias, and she is a joy and
  inspiration to all who have the privilege of her company; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Maria Lemus Trevino on her 97th
  birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Trevino as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
