R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, March 25, 2007, marks the 186th anniversary of the
  start of the revolution that freed the Greek people from Ottoman
  rule; and
         WHEREAS, Ancient Greek political theory and practice
  inspired the founding fathers of the United States as they framed
  the constitution and embarked upon the creation of the American
  nation; and
         WHEREAS, Citizens of Texas drew on Greek democratic
  principles when they formed a government after achieving
  independence from Mexico in 1836; and
         WHEREAS, Communities throughout Texas have long welcomed
  Greek immigrants and their descendants, and the contributions of
  these individuals to the history, culture, and economy of the state
  have grown steadily since the early 1900s, when the most Greeks
  immigrated to the United States;  Texans have greatly benefited
  from the strong record of public service compiled by these
  citizens, as well as from their deep dedication to family,
  education, and their faith; and
         WHEREAS, Greek Independence Day has been observed officially
  in Texas since 1943, when the governor of the state issued a
  proclamation in remembrance, and the day remains significant to all
  who hold freedom and democracy as treasured ideals; and
         WHEREAS, It is fitting that all Texans should proudly join
  Greek Americans in celebrating this historic date and in
  reaffirming the democratic vision that gave birth to our two great
  nations as we commemorate our special ties of friendship, history,
  and shared values; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize March 25, 2007, as Greek Independence
  Day and honor the important role the Greek people have played in the
  annals of the Lone Star State.
