R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Texas Department of State Health Services and |
|
the Center for Safe Communities & Schools are sponsoring Texas |
|
Tobacco-Free Kids Day on March 28, 2007; and |
|
WHEREAS, Tobacco use is a tremendous burden to the state, |
|
contributing to the premature death of some 24,000 Texans each |
|
year; in addition, secondhand smoke is cause for great concern, as |
|
it increases the risk for lung cancer and coronary heart disease in |
|
nonsmoking adults and endangers the health of children; and |
|
WHEREAS, The tobacco industry spends more than $15 billion a |
|
year on marketing and advertising, much of it aimed toward young |
|
people, and almost 90 percent of adults who smoke began using |
|
tobacco before the age of 18; and |
|
WHEREAS, Taking place in schools throughout the state, Texas |
|
Tobacco-Free Kids Day is an effort to encourage students of all ages |
|
to lead tobacco-free lives; held in conjunction with the 12th |
|
annual "Kick Butts" Day, this event serves as an annual celebration |
|
of youth leadership and activism in tobacco prevention efforts; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize March 28, 2007, as Texas Tobacco-Free |
|
Kids Day and commend all those involved in the effort to promote a |
|
healthy future for young Texans. |
