R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Texas Department of State Health Services and
  the Center for Safe Communities & Schools are sponsoring Texas
  Tobacco-Free Kids Day on March 28, 2007; and
         WHEREAS, Tobacco use is a tremendous burden to the state,
  contributing to the premature death of some 24,000 Texans each
  year; in addition, secondhand smoke is cause for great concern, as
  it increases the risk for lung cancer and coronary heart disease in
  nonsmoking adults and endangers the health of children; and
         WHEREAS, The tobacco industry spends more than $15 billion a
  year on marketing and advertising, much of it aimed toward young
  people, and almost 90 percent of adults who smoke began using
  tobacco before the age of 18; and
         WHEREAS, Taking place in schools throughout the state, Texas
  Tobacco-Free Kids Day is an effort to encourage students of all ages
  to lead tobacco-free lives; held in conjunction with the 12th
  annual "Kick Butts" Day, this event serves as an annual celebration
  of youth leadership and activism in tobacco prevention efforts;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize March 28, 2007, as Texas Tobacco-Free
  Kids Day and commend all those involved in the effort to promote a
  healthy future for young Texans.
