R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Randal P. Jones Park in Houston is being rededicated
  in honor of civic leader Richard Brock during a special ceremony on
  March 31, 2007; and
         WHEREAS, The First Ward Civic Association and Avenue
  Community Development Corporation recently came together in an
  effort to pay tribute to the many contributions of Richard Brock;
  the groups lobbied the City of Houston and on January 31, 2007, the
  park was officially renamed; and
         WHEREAS, One of the first African American lawmakers in the
  Bayou City, Richard Brock served as alderman for Houston's First
  and Fourth Wards; he owned and operated Brock's Blacksmith Shop and
  contributed greatly to his community, helping to found two local
  churches, a school, a park, and the first Masonic lodge in the city
  for African Americans; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Brock left an indelible imprint on the city of
  Houston, and the efforts of the First Ward Civic Association and
  Avenue CDC have ensured that his legacy will not soon be forgotten;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the rededication of Randal P. Jones
  Park in honor of Richard Brock and commend the members of the First
  Ward Civic Association and Avenue Community Development
  Corporation for committing their time and energy to this worthwhile
  endeavor.
