R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The South Dallas Business and Professional Women's
  Club, Inc., is honoring esteemed members of the community on April
  14, 2007, at its annual V. Alyce Foster Trailblazer Awards and
  Scholarship Luncheon; and
         WHEREAS, Founded in 1954, this notable nonprofit
  organization has a long tradition of benefiting Dallas County
  residents by providing programs and activities primarily designed
  to address issues affecting women and young people; and
         WHEREAS, The club's inaugural Trailblazer Awards Luncheon
  was held in 1964 to recognize individuals endeavoring to enhance
  the quality of life for their fellow citizens; a decade later, the
  club awarded its first scholarship, and since then more than
  $250,000 has been earmarked for students pursuing higher education;
  and
         WHEREAS, Recipients of the 2007 Trailblazer Award include:
  Ron Washington, the first African American manager of the Texas
  Rangers baseball team; Eddie Burns, the Dallas Fire-Rescue
  Department's first African American fire chief; Shilah Phillips,
  the first African American Miss Texas; Larry Lewis, the Lancaster
  Independent School District's first African American
  superintendent; and T. Schnell Blanton, the country's first female
  African American wholesale distributor of fine wines and spirits;
  and
         WHEREAS, Other honorees are Man of the Year Willis Johnson,
  Humanitarian Dr. Wright Lassiter, Jr., Woman of the Year Demetris
  Sampson, Sojourner Truth Award winner Vera Moore, Mabel Meshack
  White Business Award recipient Dianne C. Thomas, Professional Woman
  Award winner Paula Caldwell, and Youth Achiever Roderick Demming;
  and
         WHEREAS, Through its community service and educational
  programs, the Dallas Business and Professional Women's Club has had
  a positive impact in the areas of health, education, employment,
  and economic development, and its record of achievement is most
  worthy of commendation; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the South Dallas Business and
  Professional Women's Club, Inc., for its continuing contributions
  to its community and congratulate the honorees of the 2007 V. Alyce
  Foster Trailblazer Awards and Scholarship Luncheon; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the women's club as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
