R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Young athletes Alejandro "Alex" Lee Garza, Jr., and
  Amanda Garza of Rio Grande City demonstrated excellence at the 2006
  Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games, held in Hampton Roads,
  Virginia, from July 30 to August 4; and
         WHEREAS, A seventh-grader at Ringgold Middle School, Alex
  Garza set a national record in the shot put, heaving the shot 47
  feet, 4-1/4 inches to take first place in the event; moreover, he
  finished second in the discus throw, with a toss of 120 feet, 1
  inch; and
         WHEREAS, Amanda Garza, who also participates in the shot put,
  placed second in the event with a throw of 24 feet, 7-1/4 inches;
  she is a fourth-grade student at Dr. Mario E. Ramirez Elementary
  School; and
         WHEREAS, Earlier in the year, the siblings competed at the
  2006 South Texas AAU Regional Track Meet; Alex placed first in the
  shot put, with a throw of 45 feet, 6 inches, and took third in the
  discus, hurling the disc 128 feet, 9 inches; Amanda finished second
  in the shot put, tossing the orb 22 feet, 8 inches; and
         WHEREAS, Alex and Amanda are the children of proud parents
  Alex and Maricelda Garza; their grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
  Julian Garza of Rio Grande City and Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Salinas of
  La Puerta; and
         WHEREAS, Through hard work and dedication, Alex and Amanda
  Garza have experienced great success in track and field, and their
  commitment to excellence will undoubtedly create many more
  opportunities for achievement; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Alex and Amanda Garza on their
  accomplishments at the 2006 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic
  Games and extend best wishes to these talented Texans for continued
  success in all their endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Garzas as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
