R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The magazine Texas Monthly is widely regarded as the
  indispensable authority on the state's politics, industry,
  education, culture, and travel, and its dynamic coverage of life in
  contemporary Texas has been recognized with a nomination for a 2007
  National Magazine Award in the category of General Excellence; and
         WHEREAS, Considered by many to be the magazine industry's
  most prestigious honors, the National Magazine Awards were
  established in 1966 by the American Society of Magazine Editors;
  they are sponsored by ASME and the Columbia University Graduate
  School of Journalism; and
         WHEREAS, The General Excellence category of the awards
  recognizes the successful interaction of reporting, writing,
  editing, and design in capturing the attention of readers and
  fulfilling the magazine's unique mission; and
         WHEREAS, Founded by Michael R. Levy in 1973, Texas Monthly,
  "the national magazine of Texas," is published by Emmis Publishing;
  it has a paid circulation of 300,000 and is read every month by some
  2.5 million people across the state and beyond its borders; since
  its beginning, Texas Monthly has received 52 nominations for a
  National Magazine Award, and has won nine times; under current
  editor Evan Smith, the magazine has been nominated in the General
  Excellence category seven out of eight years; and
         WHEREAS, Texas Monthly is one of the great institutions of
  the Lone Star State, representing the complexity, diversity, and
  colorful history of the state to a large and loyal readership both
  in Texas and nationwide; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the staff and publishers of Texas
  Monthly on its nomination for a National Magazine Award in the
  category of General Excellence and extend best wishes for its
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Texas Monthly as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
