R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The magazine Texas Monthly is widely regarded as the |
|
indispensable authority on the state's politics, industry, |
|
education, culture, and travel, and its dynamic coverage of life in |
|
contemporary Texas has been recognized with a nomination for a 2007 |
|
National Magazine Award in the category of General Excellence; and |
|
WHEREAS, Considered by many to be the magazine industry's |
|
most prestigious honors, the National Magazine Awards were |
|
established in 1966 by the American Society of Magazine Editors; |
|
they are sponsored by ASME and the Columbia University Graduate |
|
School of Journalism; and |
|
WHEREAS, The General Excellence category of the awards |
|
recognizes the successful interaction of reporting, writing, |
|
editing, and design in capturing the attention of readers and |
|
fulfilling the magazine's unique mission; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded by Michael R. Levy in 1973, Texas Monthly, |
|
"the national magazine of Texas," is published by Emmis Publishing; |
|
it has a paid circulation of 300,000 and is read every month by some |
|
2.5 million people across the state and beyond its borders; since |
|
its beginning, Texas Monthly has received 52 nominations for a |
|
National Magazine Award, and has won nine times; under current |
|
editor Evan Smith, the magazine has been nominated in the General |
|
Excellence category seven out of eight years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Texas Monthly is one of the great institutions of |
|
the Lone Star State, representing the complexity, diversity, and |
|
colorful history of the state to a large and loyal readership both |
|
in Texas and nationwide; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the staff and publishers of Texas |
|
Monthly on its nomination for a National Magazine Award in the |
|
category of General Excellence and extend best wishes for its |
|
continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Texas Monthly as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
