R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Ricardo A. Barrera has effectively served Texas as |
|
an activist and political consultant on local, state, and federal |
|
issues; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Texas, Mr. Barrera lost his |
|
mother at the age of two when she became a victim of violent crime |
|
and he also lost his father at an early age and was adopted by |
|
relatives; he graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M |
|
University-Kingsville with a degree in political science after |
|
serving as student body president of his university for two terms, |
|
as member of the Texas A&M University System Chancellor's Student |
|
Advisory Board for two terms, and as founder and advisor of the |
|
University Crime Stoppers Unit; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his tenure as student body president, this |
|
talented young Texas leader contributed greatly to higher |
|
education, and his efforts culminated in placement on the |
|
President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and |
|
national distinction for Texas A&M University-Kingsville; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera successfully navigated his way to the |
|
Texas Tech School of Law, where he went on to become a prominent |
|
leader and competitor in nearly every one of his endeavors, |
|
including volunteering in the nonprofit sector and through |
|
church-based programs, championing human rights for children and |
|
the elderly, and participating with the Citizens Commission on |
|
Human Rights; and |
|
WHEREAS, On the federal level, Mr. Barrera served as a |
|
valuable consultant to Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz in combating |
|
area military base closures and with higher education issues and |
|
community needs; and |
|
WHEREAS, On the state level, Mr. Barrera assisted members of |
|
the Texas Legislature with environmental concerns, higher |
|
education issues, and human rights issues; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ricardo Barrera is an outstanding leader, and he |
|
merits special recognition for his contributions to his community |
|
and state; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Ricardo A. Barrera for his service to the |
|
State of Texas and extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Barrera as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
