R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, human rights advocate and
  community activist Martin Luther King III strives to promote the
  message of justice and equality for all, ignited in him by his
  parents, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of Morehouse College, he served six years
  as an at-large representative for Fulton County, Georgia, in which
  capacity he helped pass legislation aimed at environmental
  protection, ethics reform, and equal opportunities in public
  contracting; in 1997, he was unanimously elected president of the
  Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the organization his
  father had cofounded three decades earlier, and under his guidance
  the SCLC convened police brutality hearings in 11 U.S. cities and
  initiated the Gun Buy-Back program as part of its Stop the
  Killing--End the Violence campaign; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. King continues to fulfill his father's legacy
  through his latest endeavor, Realizing the Dream, which he serves
  as chairman and CEO; with programs focused on nonviolence, youth
  leadership, and community empowerment, Realizing the Dream is
  committed to the creation of what Dr. King called the "Beloved
  Community"; moreover, the initiative seeks to address the growing
  gap between the rich and the poor by building a coalition of
  activists and leaders from at least 50 communities across the
  country, and to this end Mr. King is on a nationwide "Listening and
  Learning Tour"; and
         WHEREAS, Moved to share his vision of peace and human
  dignity, Martin Luther King III inspires others with his words and
  his actions, and it is indeed fitting to recognize him for his
  exemplary efforts in behalf of his fellow citizens; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Martin Luther King III for his
  contributions to social justice and extend to him sincere best
  wishes for a fruitful and enjoyable visit to the State Capitol; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
