R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an accomplished native son
  with the passing of the Honorable Walter Thomas Caven on March 13,
  2007; and
         WHEREAS, Born November 23, 1920, Mr. Caven graduated from
  Marshall High School, where he was president of his senior class and
  the National Honor Society, and went on to earn his bachelor's
  degree from The University of Texas; after the attack on Pearl
  Harbor, he was inspired to serve his country in World War II, and he
  distinguished himself as a 7th Division infantry platoon leader;
  wounded at the battle of Leyte Gulf, he was honored for his valorous
  service with the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Caven returned to The University of Texas to
  pursue his law degree, graduating in 1947; soon after, he was
  elected to the Texas House of Representatives and ably represented
  citizens of Harrison County during the 51st Legislature; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan had a notable legal career,
  representing 21 railroad companies in the Texas Railroad
  Association for more than three decades before becoming of counsel
  to the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld; and
         WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Caven shared 56 years of
  marriage with his wife, Laura, and the couple were blessed with two
  children and two grandchildren; in his free time, he enjoyed
  spending time with his loved ones, playing golf, hunting, and
  cheering for his favorite Lone Star football teams; and
         WHEREAS, Although Walter Caven will be deeply missed, the
  blessing of his life will be forever treasured by all those who were
  privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Walter
  Thomas Caven and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
  family: to his wife, Laura Caven; to his daughter, Caroline Caven;
  to his son, Tom Caven and his wife, Marsha; to his grandchildren,
  Caitlin and Andrew Caven; to his sister, Jean Hyde; and to his other
  relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Walter
  Thomas Caven.
