R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, For more than half a century, Dr. Mario E. Ramirez
  has provided able service to the residents of Roma and South Texas
  as a physician, administrator, and mentor; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Roma, Dr. Ramirez was inspired to
  practice medicine at a young age; he was influenced by his uncle, a
  pharmacist who often provided health care because the city lacked
  physicians, and he was further motivated to pursue a career as a
  doctor after losing his younger brother, who died at the age of
  seven; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Ramirez completed pre-med requirements at The
  University of Texas by the age of 18 and earned his medical degree
  from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine by the age of
  22; fulfilling his lifelong ambition to return to Roma and serve the
  citizens of his hometown, he opened the first family practice in
  Starr County in 1950, eight years before establishing the first
  hospital in Roma; and
         WHEREAS, Leaving his practice in 1993, Dr. Ramirez worked for
  Blue Cross/Blue Shield before accepting new challenges as the vice
  president of South Texas initiatives at The University of Texas
  Health Science Center, a position from which he has recently
  retired; in this role, he worked to help and inspire young people to
  enter the medical profession in order to serve the citizens of the
  Rio Grande Valley; he also founded the program, Med/Ed, which has
  seen more than 1,000 students complete its curriculum, 86 of whom
  have already been accepted to medical school; and
         WHEREAS, Highly respected by all who know him, Dr. Ramirez is
  an inspiration of professional excellence, and his trailblazing
  efforts have made an undeniable and positive impact on the
  community that is proud, and fortunate, to claim him as a native
  son; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Dr. Mario E. Ramirez on his years of
  service to the people of Roma, Starr County, and South Texas and
  extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Ramirez as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
