WHEREAS, The Asian Trade District in northwest Dallas is a
popular tourist destination encompassing nearly four square miles
along Harry Hines Boulevard and Royal Lane; bordered by Interstate
Highways 35 and 635, the district is home to 21 shopping centers
comprising more than 300 individual specialty shops visited by more
than 32,000 patrons each year; and
WHEREAS, The district's many residents and merchants, as well
as numerous Dallas-area corporations and civic organizations, have
requested signage on IH-35 at Royal Lane and at Walnut Hill Lane and
on IH-635 at Josey Lane to identify the location of the district for
travelers on the two highways; and
WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Transportation is
responsible for providing supplemental guide signs on public
highways for destinations that attract a significant number of
motorists who are unfamiliar with the local area, and the signage
for the Asian Trade District certainly qualifies as vital to the
district's many visitors from outside the Dallas-Fort Worth
  Metroplex; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
Legislature hereby direct the Texas Department of Transportation to
provide supplemental guide signs on IH-35 and IH-635 to identify
the location of the Asian Trade District in northwest Dallas; and,
  be it further
RESOLVED, That the chief clerk of the Texas House of
Representatives forward an official copy of this resolution to the
chair of the Texas Transportation Commission and to the executive
director of the Texas Department of Transportation.
