| WHEREAS, John W. Johnson of Houston, who is retiring as a | ||
| commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission in 2007, has | ||
| rendered exceptional service to the citizens of this state; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Appointed to the commission by then Governor George | ||
| W. Bush, Mr. Johnson took office in February 1999, and during his | ||
| notable eight-year tenure, he led the body as chair from 2000 to | ||
| 2004; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson has further served on the Governor's | ||
| Business Council, on the Task Force on Charter Schools, and as a | ||
| member of the Coastal Coordination Council; moreover, he has been | ||
| appointed to the three-member Coastal Land Advisory Board by | ||
| Governor Rick Perry and to the J. William Fulbright Foreign | ||
| Scholarship Board by President George W. Bush; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Mr. Johnson | ||
| chairs both Permian Mud Service, Inc., and the executive committee | ||
| of its subsidiary, Champion Technologies; he was the founding | ||
| chairman of Amegy Bank of Texas and continues to lead the bank as | ||
| chair of its executive committee; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has also shared his time with a | ||
| number of worthwhile community groups; a former trustee of St. | ||
| Luke's Methodist Church Foundation, he has chaired the board of the | ||
| Houston Museum of Natural Science and St. John's School, is a past | ||
| director of Goodwill Industries, and has been actively involved | ||
| with the American Leadership Forum and the Young Presidents' | ||
| Organization; and | ||
| WHEREAS, His contributions have earned Commissioner Johnson | ||
| the Benjamin Banneker Community Builder Award from the Barbara | ||
| Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern | ||
| University, the Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Award for | ||
| Leadership in Transportation, and the Flowers Underwood | ||
| Distinguished Alumnus Award from Vanderbilt University; and | ||
| WHEREAS, John Johnson has served the State of Texas with | ||
| dedication and integrity, and his unwavering commitment to the | ||
| duties of his office has reflected government service at its | ||
| finest; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commend John W. Johnson on the occasion of his | ||
| retirement from the Texas Transportation Commission and extend to | ||
| him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Mr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives. | ||
