R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Mary Alice Skaggs of Collin County celebrates her
  99th birthday on April 22, 2007, and her long and productive life
  continues to inspire family members, friends, and former students;
  and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Skaggs devoted 31 years to teaching English,
  journalism, and economics with the Plano Independent School
  District, and in 1996 the district paid tribute to her legacy of
  achievement by naming Skaggs Elementary School, a nationally
  recognized Blue Ribbon school, in her honor; and
         WHEREAS, The first teacher in the district to possess a
  master's degree, Mrs. Skaggs further distinguished herself through
  her longtime service as the senior class sponsor, a role she held
  throughout her tenure with Plano ISD; she also sponsored the Junior
  Thursday Study Club, an organization for high school girls, and 50
  years later, she continues to remain active with the group; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Celina and raised in Dallas, Mrs. Skaggs
  earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Austin College in
  Sherman; after pursuing additional graduate work at Texas Woman's
  University and Southern Methodist University, she began her career
  in Gunter, where she taught English and Latin; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Skaggs enjoyed membership with the National
  Council of Teachers of English for 25 years and figured prominently
  in the organization of its Plano chapter; she also conducted a
  senior English workshop in Hawaii as part of her affiliation with
  that group; and
         WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous honors, Mrs. Skaggs was
  named Teacher of the Year by the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs
  in 1958 and later received awards from the Plano Business and
  Professional Women's Club, the Plano Chamber of Commerce, and the
  Texas Joint English Committee; and
         WHEREAS, Still active in her community, Mrs. Skaggs is a
  member of the Plano Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa
  Gamma, Austin College's Kappa Gamma Chi, and the Pitman Creek
  Church of Christ; and
         WHEREAS, Mary Alice Skaggs has enriched the lives of
  countless young Texans, and her birthday provides a fitting
  opportunity to recognize her for her many achievements and
  contributions through the years; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Mary Alice Skaggs on the joyous occasion
  of her 99th birthday and extend best wishes to her for a memorable
  celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Skaggs as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
