R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Members of Prairie View A&M University National
  Alumni Association are gathering in Houston on July 11-15, 2007,
  for their national convention; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 1876, Prairie View A&M University is
  the state's second oldest public institution of higher education;
  once designated a "normal school" to prepare and train African
  American teachers, it was authorized as a branch of the
  Agricultural Experiment Station in 1887 and as a land grant college
  in 1890, beginning an important tradition of agricultural research
  and community service; and
         WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Dr. George C. Wright, PVAMU
  today offers 50 undergraduate majors, 35 master's degrees, and four
  doctoral degree programs and is home to an increasingly diverse
  student body more than 8,000 strong; in addition, there are nearly
  100 active campus groups, as well as a successful athletics
  department; and
         WHEREAS,  PVAMU continues to build on its legacy as a
  preeminent educator of engineers, nurses, and educators thanks in
  part to the support of its devoted alumni, who stay connected to
  their alma mater through some 35 chapters across the country; and
         WHEREAS, Alumni of Prairie View A&M University may take
  justifiable pride in their alma mater, just as current and future
  students may look to the graduates of PVAMU as outstanding models of
  achievement; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Prairie View A&M University for its
  vital contributions to the Lone Star State and extend to members of
  the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association sincere
  best wishes for a productive and enjoyable convention; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni
  Association as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
  Representatives.
