R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Maya Andrea Hubner of Austin, who passed away on
  June 27, 2006, at the age of 13, touched the hearts of countless
  people during her brief time on this earth; and
         WHEREAS, Born on July 7, 1992, to Georjean and Christian
  Hubner, this beloved child was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic
  leukemia at the age of 12; although the disease would ultimately
  claim her life, it could not diminish her spirit, and she continued
  to live with optimism and grace for the duration of her illness; and
         WHEREAS, Maya Hubner earned straight A's at Barton Hills
  Elementary School and was named to the National Honor Society as a
  seventh-grader at Kealing Middle School; drawn to creative
  endeavors, she took great pleasure in dancing, acting, figure
  skating, and playing the piano, and she dreamt of becoming a writer
  and an artist; and
         WHEREAS, Following her diagnosis, Maya volunteered to
  participate in cancer research studies in the hope that other
  children might benefit from the findings, and she encouraged and
  inspired local members of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in
  Training in their efforts to raise funds for research through their
  participation in athletic events; moreover, knowing she would
  eventually lose her hair to treatment, she donated it to Locks of
  Love, an organization that provides hairpieces to financially
  disadvantaged young people suffering from medical hair loss; and
         WHEREAS, Maya drew strength and comfort from creating art and
  eagerly joined the CureSearch Young Artists program so that her
  work could be sold in support of childhood cancer research; in 2005,
  her "Surfin' Snowman" picture was selected for a holiday greeting
  card, and since her death, 10 other pieces have been made available
  as note cards; and
         WHEREAS, Although her life ended far too soon, Maya Hubner
  leaves behind memories of her compassion, generosity, and artistic
  accomplishments that will forever be treasured by those who were
  fortunate enough to share in the blessing of her life; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Maya Andrea Hubner and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
  parents, Georjean and Christian Hubner; to her siblings, Stefan and
  Elena; to her grandparents, Dr. Karl Hubner and Sibyll Hubner; to
  her uncle, Philipp Hubner; to her aunt, Ia Wood; to her cousin,
  Linus Wood; and to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maya Andrea
  Hubner.
