R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Members of First United Methodist Church of Uvalde |
|
are celebrating the church's sesquicentennial on April 22, 2007; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1857, the church relied on itinerant |
|
preachers known as circuit riders during its early years; those |
|
devoted individuals, including H. G. Horton, braved the frontiers |
|
in order to preach to fellow Christians in outlying towns; circuit |
|
riders were also called upon to perform baptisms, conduct marriage |
|
ceremonies, and administer last rites when necessary; and |
|
WHEREAS, The first church building was constructed on Garden |
|
Street around 1859-1860; fire is thought to have destroyed that |
|
building, and a new structure was built on Getty Street to take the |
|
place of the original; by 1889, the church was well established, |
|
with 100 members sharing in faith and fellowship and no longer |
|
dependent on the efforts of circuit riders; and |
|
WHEREAS, Shortly after the turn of the century, the church |
|
moved in order to accommodate its growing congregation; land was |
|
purchased in 1907 and construction began the following year, and |
|
the new church building at the corner of High and Oak Streets was |
|
dedicated in 1913; and |
|
WHEREAS, First United Methodist Church of Uvalde has |
|
continued to experience growth and change in the ensuing years, |
|
including the addition of a new fellowship hall and kitchen in 1950, |
|
the chartering of Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and the |
|
construction of the Christian Life Center in 1993; today, the |
|
church is home to more than 700 members; and |
|
WHEREAS, For 150 years, First United Methodist Church of |
|
Uvalde has met the spiritual needs of its members, and by |
|
commemorating this momentous occasion in the church's history, the |
|
leaders and congregants have demonstrated their commitment to their |
|
faith and to each other; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize the sesquicentennial of First United |
|
Methodist Church of Uvalde and extend best wishes to the |
|
congregation for a joyous and memorable celebration; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the congregants of First United Methodist Church of |
|
Uvalde as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
|
Representatives. |
