R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Lone Star State lost an esteemed public servant
  with the passing of Susan C. Cranford of Austin on March 22, 2007;
  and
         WHEREAS, Born on March 6, 1947, in Conroe, Susan Cranford
  began an outstanding career in criminal justice in 1973 as a teacher
  of incarcerated individuals for the Windham School District; she
  went on to serve as a substance abuse counselor and an assistant
  warden before rising to the rank of senior warden, in which capacity
  she developed innovative programs for female offenders and worked
  for nearly a decade; in 1994, she was appointed assistant director
  of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice State Jail Division and
  subsequently served as the director of the TDCJ Community Justice
  Assistance Division; she retired in 2001 as director of the TDCJ
  Private Facilities Oversight and Monitoring Division; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Cranford further distinguished herself as
  president of the Texas Corrections Association and as a member of
  the American Correctional Association's Congress Planning
  Committee; over the years, she garnered numerous honors, including
  an Outstanding Woman in Texas Government Award and an Outstanding
  Woman in Texas Government Pioneer Spirit Award; moreover, she
  received the Clarence A. Stevenson Award in 2003 for her lifetime
  contributions to community corrections; and
         WHEREAS, Known for her exuberant and cheerful spirit, Ms.
  Cranford was guided by her belief in the potential for anyone to
  achieve success, and she encouraged people to strive for their
  best; in addition, her able leadership in the field of criminal
  justice helped open doors for more women to join the profession; and
         WHEREAS, Susan Cranford earned the respect and admiration of
  friends and colleagues alike for her exceptional accomplishments,
  her enthusiasm and dedication, and her genuine compassion for
  others; although she will be deeply missed, she leaves behind a
  legacy that will continue to inspire others for many years to come;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Susan C. Cranford and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
  brother, Joe A. Cranford; to her sister, Diane Cranford Strunk and
  her husband, Paul; to her aunts, Tessie Baker and Nettie Derr; to
  her nieces and nephews, Rebecca Cranford, Joey Cranford, Chris
  Strunk and his wife, Sarah, Michael Strunk, and Jennifer Strunk;
  and to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Susan C.
  Cranford.
