R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The passing of Jack Clarke, Jr., on February 4,
  2007, at the age of 90, deeply saddened the family and friends of
  this respected West Kerr County rancher; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Clarke graduated from San Jacinto High School in
  Houston and earned a bachelor's degree from Rice University in
  1937; a gifted athlete, he entered the coaching profession and
  successfully guided the Conroe High School football and track teams
  for five years; during the summers of 1940 and 1941, he also served
  as a counselor at Camp Stewart; and
         WHEREAS, Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr.
  Clarke joined the U.S. Navy; he completed his military obligation
  in 1944 with the rank of lieutenant commander; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Clarke founded the Clarke Bottling and
  Distributing Company in Conroe in 1945 and retained ownership of
  the business until 1980, when he sold it to the Pepsi-Cola Company;
  he and his wife, Virginia Ruth Clarke, moved to Clarke Ranch in
  western Kerr County in 1972; and
         WHEREAS, Involved in many civic and community organizations,
  Mr. Clarke was a member and former president of the Conroe Rotary
  Club, a member and past president of the Montgomery County Chamber
  of Commerce, a life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo,
  a past president of the Houston Hereford Club, and a 23-year member
  of the board of directors for the Kerr County Soil and Water
  Conservation District, a post from which he retired in December
  2006; in addition, this esteemed Texan was an active parishioner of
  the First United Methodist Church of Conroe, where he served on the
  board of stewards and on the church finance and building
  committees, and a valued congregant of First United Methodist
  Church of Kerrville; and
         WHEREAS, Held in the highest regard by many fellow citizens,
  Jack Clarke, Jr., could take pride in a long record of constructive
  endeavor, and he is remembered with great affection by all who knew
  and treasured him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jack Clarke, Jr., and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of
  67 years, Virginia Clarke; to his son, Jack Clarke III and his wife,
  Carolyn; to his granddaughters, Nicole Bilbao and her husband,
  Raymond, and Carey Bond and her husband, Coburn; to his
  great-grandchildren, Jack Raymond, Cole Daniel, and Carolyn
  Nicole; to his nephew, Dr. Joseph Simpson; and to his other
  relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack
  Clarke, Jr.
