R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Denise D. Harris has been named a winner of the 2007
  Outstanding Texan Award in the category of education by the Texas
  Legislative Black Caucus; and
         WHEREAS, Outstanding Texans are honored for the positive
  impact they make in their communities, and the dedicated service
  that Ms. Harris has provided as an educator has greatly enhanced the
  lives of many individuals in the Dallas area; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of Clarksdale High School, Ms. Harris
  earned an associate's degree from Coahoma Junior College, where she
  served as secretary of Phi Beta Lambda, vice president of the
  Student Government Association, and editor-in-chief of The
  Coahoman yearbook and The Coahoma Tribune student newspaper; she
  went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in business
  administration from Mississippi Valley State University and is
  currently studying for her master's degree in education at Texas
  A&M University; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Harris teaches reading at W. H. Atwell Middle
  School Academy and further serves the institution as coordinator of
  the UIL academic program and the National Junior Honor Society and
  as chair of the new teachers' support committee; and
         WHEREAS, Recognized for her exceptional efforts in behalf of
  her students, Ms. Harris was named Atwell's 2005-2006 Teacher of
  the Year; and
         WHEREAS, She also shares her time with a number of
  professional organizations, including the International Reading
  Association, Concerned Educators for Black Students, and
  Alliance/AFT; and
         WHEREAS, Denise Harris stands as an inspiring example of how
  one person can better a community through professional dedication,
  and the Outstanding Texan commendation is a fitting recognition of
  her exemplary achievements; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Denise D. Harris on receiving a
  2007 Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black
  Caucus and extend to her best wishes for further success; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Harris as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
