R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Each year April 25 is celebrated as Red Hat Society
  Day by members of the Red Hat Society across the globe; and
         WHEREAS, The Red Hat Society is an international
  "dis-organization" of women over the age of 50 who are devoted to
  having fun and celebrating their lives; and
         WHEREAS, Inspired by the poem "Warning" by the British writer
  Jenny Joseph, which begins, "When I am an old woman I shall wear
  purple/With a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me," artist
  Sue Ellen Cooper of Fullerton, California, founded the Red Hat
  Society; its first meeting occurred on April 25, 1998, when Ms.
  Cooper and five friends dressed in red hats and purple clothing and
  met for tea; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, the society has grown from that
  lively group into a sisterhood of more than 40,000 chapters in all
  50 states and around the world; other than the requirement that its
  members must wear red hats and purple clothing when they meet, the
  society has no rules or bylaws; and
         WHEREAS, Supported by their under-50 sisters, who may join as
  Pink Hatters, the society has as its sole mission to enliven the
  image of women over 50 through good humor and laughter; the group
  promotes its mission through chapter meetings, conventions,
  cruises, a series of books, and a new musical entitled Hats!; and
         WHEREAS, Unaffiliated with any one race, religion, or
  political party and embracing women from all walks of life, the Red
  Hat Society simply and exuberantly celebrates the idea of women
  getting better, wiser, and happier as they age; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize April 25, 2007, as Red Hat Society Day
  in Texas and extend to the group's members best wishes for their
  continued success, long life, and happiness.
