R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The city of Weslaco has lost an admired citizen and |
|
leader with the passing of Isaac D. Rodriguez, who died on April 6, |
|
2007, at the age of 73; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born to Genaro and Petra Rodriguez in Mercedes, |
|
Isaac Rodriguez was a lifelong resident of Weslaco; he attended St. |
|
Joan of Arc Catholic School and also received a public school |
|
education; he joined the U.S. Air Force and was honorably |
|
discharged after a year of service because of an injury; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following his return to Weslaco, Mr. Rodriguez |
|
embarked on a highly successful business career; he worked in |
|
several department stores and finance companies before |
|
establishing Weslaco Loan Company in the early 1970s and Rodriguez |
|
Bail Bonds in 1976; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1984 he heeded the call of electoral politics, |
|
winning a seat on the city commission; he continued to serve in that |
|
office until 2006, with the exception of a three-year hiatus in the |
|
mid-1990s, and several times during his tenure he served as mayor |
|
pro tem; he also served as a member of the planning and zoning |
|
commission, as a member of the city's human relations board, and as |
|
vice chair of the Hidalgo County Housing Authority; and |
|
WHEREAS, Isaac Rodriguez gave generously of his time and |
|
talents to many community organizations; a charter member of the |
|
League of United Latin American Citizens Council No. 291, he served |
|
that group as president and treasurer; in addition, he served as a |
|
member of the Amigos Del Valle Board of Directors, as chair of the |
|
Weslaco Catholic Federal Credit Union for 15 years, and as |
|
treasurer and adjutant of American Legion Post 494; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan played an active role in the |
|
Knights of Columbus, St. Pius X Catholic Church, and the American |
|
Heart Association; he also volunteered with the Salvation Army and |
|
helped sponsor the senior baseball league; and |
|
WHEREAS, In March 2006, Isaac Rodriguez was inducted into the |
|
Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame, and in September of that year, the |
|
City of Weslaco renamed a local park in his honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Rodriguez was a devoted husband to his wife of 41 |
|
years, the former Rosalinda Cisneros, whom he married on April 15, |
|
1966; he was also a loving father to his three sons, David and Larry |
|
Rodriguez and the late Isaac Rodriguez, Jr.; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Rodriguez will be fondly remembered for the |
|
great love he had for his family and for his community; his desire |
|
to serve the people of Weslaco was the driving force behind his long |
|
career in municipal government, and his community leadership will |
|
be truly missed; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Isaac D. Rodriguez and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, |
|
Rosalinda "Rosie" Rodriguez; to his sons, David and Larry |
|
Rodriguez; to his grandchildren, Sydney and Zachary Rodriguez; to |
|
his brothers, Genaro D. Rodriguez and his wife, Aurelia, Raquel |
|
"Kelo" D. Rodriguez, Jesus D. "Chuy" Rodriguez and his wife, |
|
Cleofas, and Israel D. "Vito" Rodriguez and his wife, Beatrice; and |
|
to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Isaac D. |
|
Rodriguez. |
