R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The city of Plainview is celebrating the centennial |
|
of its incorporation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Plainview was settled originally in the 1880s by Z. |
|
T. Maxwell and Edwin Lowden Lowe and their families, who set up a |
|
post office and named the town for the vast, treeless plain all |
|
around; in 1888, Hale County was established, with Plainview as the |
|
county seat; and |
|
WHEREAS, The arrival of the Pecos and Northern Texas Railroad |
|
in 1906 helped the town to grow, and in 1907, Plainview was |
|
incorporated; by 1910 it had a population of almost 3,000 and was |
|
home to two colleges, including Wayland Baptist University, and an |
|
opera house; and |
|
WHEREAS, The introduction of irrigation in 1910 allowed more |
|
growth, and the Texas Land and Development Company drew settlers |
|
from all over the country with the promise of flat, fertile, |
|
well-irrigated land; today Plainview is the processing and |
|
distribution center of one of the country's most important |
|
agriculture regions, and companies like Azteca Milling and Cargill |
|
Meat Solutions contribute greatly to its continuing prosperity; and |
|
WHEREAS, The city offers its citizens such cultural and |
|
recreational amenities as the Plainview Symphony, the Plainview |
|
Municipal Golf Course, and the Llano Estacado Museum on the campus |
|
of Wayland Baptist University; additionally, residents and |
|
visitors alike may enjoy the Plainview Cattle Drive, a city-wide |
|
display of 45 handpainted fiberglass cows, which was created to |
|
promote the city's annual Cowboy Days every September; and |
|
WHEREAS, The citizens of Plainview are justifiably proud of |
|
their history and their contributions to the Lone Star State, and it |
|
is fitting to pay tribute to their hometown's first 100 years; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the city of Plainview on its |
|
centennial and extend best wishes to the residents of Plainview for |
|
a fine year of celebration; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the city as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
