R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Texas high school coaching legend Mike Johnston is |
|
deservedly being inducted into the Texas High School Coaches |
|
Association Hall of Honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, The longtime head coach at Katy High School, Coach |
|
Johnston currently heads the football program at Houston Christian |
|
High School, where he hopes to duplicate the success that he |
|
achieved during his tenure at Katy High; and |
|
WHEREAS, A 1969 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State |
|
University, Coach Johnston was a three-year letterman on the |
|
school's football team, playing linebacker and center for the |
|
Lumberjacks; he began his coaching career at Hull-Daisetta High |
|
School and went on to coach at Nacogdoches High School, Forest Park |
|
High School in Beaumont, and Abilene High School before accepting |
|
the head coaching position at Katy High School; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 22 years as head coach of the Katy Tigers, Coach |
|
Johnston led his team to three state championships, five state |
|
title finals, and 12 district championships, compiling a record of |
|
200-76; he has mentored countless young men on the importance of |
|
gridiron fundamentals and teamwork, instilling integrity, |
|
self-esteem, and pride in his young charges; and |
|
WHEREAS, Coach Johnston has earned numerous honors and |
|
accolades during his impressive coaching career, including |
|
recognition as Coach of the Year by the Houston Chronicle, the |
|
Houston Post, and the Houston Touchdown Club; he is a seven-time |
|
selection as District Coach of the Year and coached in the 1999 |
|
North-South All-Star game and the 2004 Global Junior Championship |
|
Game; and |
|
WHEREAS, A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, |
|
this dedicated educator and community leader has served as |
|
president and as a director of the Texas High School Coaches |
|
Association and is a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Katy; he |
|
and his wife, Donna, have been blessed with two sons, Russ and Paul, |
|
a daughter-in-law, Shelby, and a granddaughter, Selah; and |
|
WHEREAS, Induction into the Texas High School Coaches |
|
Association Hall of Honor is the highest honor bestowed on high |
|
school coaches in the Lone Star State, and Coach Johnston has |
|
rightfully earned his place among the elite of his profession; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Mike Johnston on his induction into |
|
the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor and extend |
|
best wishes to him for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Coach Johnston as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
