R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, March 6, 2007, brought to a close an impressive |
|
career when Ernest McMillan retired as the CEO and executive |
|
director of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program (FWEP); and |
|
WHEREAS, The founder of this significant endeavor, Mr. |
|
McMillan created FWEP in June 1984 to help preempt negative |
|
environmental influences and promote the positive development of |
|
inner-city boys; through the years, he has aided countless area |
|
youth in acquiring the skills they need for success and |
|
achievement; and |
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of Brazos Junior College, this notable |
|
Texan also studied at Morehouse College, The University of Texas at |
|
Arlington, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake; he is a |
|
veteran human rights activist with experience dating to the 1960s, |
|
when he served with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee |
|
in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia; in addition, he has worked as |
|
a social services manager, a counselor for the Alternative Drug |
|
Abuse Program of VGS, and as a project manager for the |
|
Communities-In-Schools program at Wesley Elementary in Houston; he |
|
initiated the first drug prevention program for African American |
|
youth in Houston and developed People United for Justice for |
|
Prisoners, a Dallas-based support system for ex-offenders and drug |
|
abusers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. McMillan has devoted his life to making a |
|
difference in the lives of others; he may reflect with pride on his |
|
years of important work, and know that his exceptional efforts have |
|
helped to make the Lone Star State a better place; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Ernest McMillan on his retirement |
|
from the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program and extend to him best wishes |
|
for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. McMillan as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
