R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area is
  a vital civic organization that is strengthening the democratic
  principles that are the foundation of American society and
  government; and
         WHEREAS, Composed of a group of committed volunteers, the
  League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area faithfully carries
  forth the mission that was initially laid out by the founders of the
  national organization more than 80 years ago; a nonpartisan
  political organization, it encourages informed and active
  participation in government, works to increase the understanding of
  major public policy issues, and influences public policy through
  education and advocacy; and
         WHEREAS, Like other leagues across the country, the San
  Antonio area organization publishes a voters guide before elections
  that compiles each candidate's positions and qualifications; the
  league also presents candidate forums to help voters make an
  informed choice when casting their ballots; and
         WHEREAS, Though the League of Women Voters of the San Antonio
  Area does not endorse or oppose candidates, it does take positions
  on specific issues on the local, state, and national level; it has
  championed improved child care, accessible health care, and
  campaign-finance reform as well as a number of other subjects of
  vital importance to Texans; and
         WHEREAS, A respected and unbiased promoter of civic
  involvement, the League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area
  encourages responsible citizenship and government, and its
  steadfast efforts have been of great benefit to the residents of
  South Central Texas; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend the members of the League of Women
  Voters of the San Antonio Area for their valuable work and extend
  best wishes to them for continued success with their important
  work; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
