R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The congregants of the First United Methodist Church |
|
of Hondo are celebrating a milestone anniversary with the |
|
commemoration of the church's sesquicentennial on May 6, 2007; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded as the Methodist Episcopal Church South in |
|
1857, the church first held meetings in a log hut near Hondo Creek |
|
before parishioners moved to the "Rock Church" east of town; later, |
|
a private home and a schoolhouse were used for worship services |
|
until 1890, when a wood frame building was constructed at the site |
|
of the present church home; when that structure was destroyed by a |
|
tornado, a brick church was built in 1898 and later enlarged and |
|
remodeled; in 1975, members celebrated the dedication of a new |
|
sanctuary made necessary by the steady growth of the congregation; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The Methodist Episcopal Church South merged with the |
|
Methodist Episcopal Church and the Protestant Methodist Church in |
|
1939, and, nearly 30 years later, with the Evangelical United |
|
Brethren Church; in 1971, Simpson Chapel United Methodist Church |
|
was joined with First United Methodist to create a strong, unified |
|
congregation; and |
|
WHEREAS, From its beginnings, First United Methodist Church |
|
has served as a source of fellowship and spiritual guidance to its |
|
members while also ministering to the needs of the greater |
|
community, and the congregation's rich and dynamic history is |
|
indeed deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the First United Methodist Church |
|
of Hondo on 150 years of service to area Texans and extend to all |
|
those affiliated with the church sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success in the years ahead; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
