R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Science teacher Jessica Zenker and the sixth-grade |
|
class at YES Prep Southeast School in Houston have embarked upon a |
|
year-long class project to learn about and help protect an |
|
endangered species of sea turtle; and |
|
WHEREAS, The goal of the YES Prep Schools in Houston is to |
|
prepare its students for a college education, and the charter of |
|
each YES Prep School mandates that a student must be accepted at a |
|
four-year college in order to receive his or her high school |
|
diploma; the YES Prep Schools have been recognized by Newsweek |
|
magazine as among the top 100 public schools in America; and |
|
WHEREAS, The students of Ms. Zenker's class have chosen to |
|
work in behalf of the Kemp's ridley sea turtle, an endangered |
|
species that commonly lays its eggs along the coast of the Gulf of |
|
Mexico; turtle nests have been threatened by coastal development, |
|
and many turtles have lost their lives after being entangled in the |
|
nets of shrimp boats; and |
|
WHEREAS, The highly motivated sixth-graders of YES Prep |
|
Southeast have shown their concern for the sea turtles throughout |
|
the school year by studying the turtles' life cycle and visiting the |
|
sea turtle facility in Galveston; they have further expressed their |
|
concern by contacting their elected representatives urging |
|
increased protection for the turtles; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through their commitment to the preservation of this |
|
unique species, the sixth-grade students of YES Prep Southeast have |
|
demonstrated an interest in and understanding of an important |
|
scientific issue, and their efforts merit special recognition; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Jessica Zenker and the sixth-grade science |
|
class of YES Prep Southeast School in Houston for their efforts in |
|
behalf of Kemp's ridley sea turtles and extend to them best wishes |
|
for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the students as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
