R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. Robert F. Austin of Houston is celebrating his
  75th birthday on May 10, 2007, and this occasion offers a fitting
  opportunity to honor him; and
         WHEREAS, Born in New York on May 10, 1932, Dr. Austin spent
  his formative years in the Bronx, where he enjoyed playing
  basketball with his friends; he earned a bachelor of arts degree
  from Grinnell College in Iowa before serving in the U.S. Air Force
  for three years, after which he pursued a graduate degree in biology
  at Boston College; and
         WHEREAS, In 1963, Dr. Austin received his doctorate in
  medicine from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee; he
  did his pediatric residency at Upstate Medical Center of the State
  University of New York and earned a fellowship in hematology from
  Tufts University; and
         WHEREAS, A noted pediatrician and children's health
  advocate, Dr. Austin has more than 43 years of experience in the
  field of pediatrics; currently serving as a consultant advisor for
  community development at the Cullen Child and Adolescent Health
  Center, Dr. Austin was the center's director of community
  development for a number of years and played a key role in its
  establishment; he has also served as an assistant clinical
  professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine; and
         WHEREAS, For his work as an advocate for children's health
  and education, Dr. Austin received an honorary doctorate in humane
  letters from Grinnell College, where he was recently elected to the
  school's board of trustees; he is also a recipient of the Savvy
  Award, recipients of which are nominated by the Child Abuse
  Prevention Network, and he was honored in May 2006 with the
  dedication of the R. F. Austin Professional Plaza; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Austin serves on the St. Luke's Episcopal
  Charities Technical Assistance Committee and as chairman of the
  advisory committee for the Michael E. DeBakey High School for the
  Health Professions; in all of his endeavors, he is blessed with the
  love and support of his wife, Joan Perry-Austin, his children and
  their spouses, his grandchildren, and his large network of extended
  family and friends; and
         WHEREAS, A 75th birthday is a significant milestone in the
  life of an individual, and the knowledge that many of his years have
  been spent in service to children is a testament to the character
  and integrity of this notable physician; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Robert F. Austin as he
  celebrates his 75th birthday on May 10, 2007, and extend to him best
  wishes for a joyous and memorable occasion; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Austin as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
