R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The student council of Gardens Elementary School in
  Pasadena has raised $1,858 for individuals suffering from leukemia
  or lymphoma through the Pennies for Patients fund-raiser; and
         WHEREAS, Since 1995, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has
  sponsored the Pennies for Patients program, which encourages
  elementary school students to raise money to help pay for medical
  treatment for children and adults who battle these devastating
  illnesses; over the years, millions of dollars have been collected
  by primary and secondary students, and as a result, awareness of the
  two diseases has increased; and
         WHEREAS, With the help of their advisor, Andrea Luna, the
  student council led the campaign, working to educate fellow
  students about this important issue; moreover, council members
  organized the collection of money from each classroom and were
  responsible for handling the funds; at the end of the project, the
  students had far exceeded their fund-raising goal of $1,000 and had
  learned a valuable lesson in hands-on charitable work; and
         WHEREAS, Having demonstrated leadership, compassion, and an
  eagerness to make a difference through their involvement in a
  worthy cause, the members of the student council have dedicated
  much time and energy to helping others, and they may indeed reflect
  with pride on their efforts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the members of the Gardens Elementary
  School student council and their advisor, Andrea Luna, for their
  work in behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pennies for
  Patients fund-raiser and extend to them best wishes for continued
  success in all their endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the students as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
