R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The student council of Gardens Elementary School in |
|
Pasadena has raised $1,858 for individuals suffering from leukemia |
|
or lymphoma through the Pennies for Patients fund-raiser; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since 1995, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has |
|
sponsored the Pennies for Patients program, which encourages |
|
elementary school students to raise money to help pay for medical |
|
treatment for children and adults who battle these devastating |
|
illnesses; over the years, millions of dollars have been collected |
|
by primary and secondary students, and as a result, awareness of the |
|
two diseases has increased; and |
|
WHEREAS, With the help of their advisor, Andrea Luna, the |
|
student council led the campaign, working to educate fellow |
|
students about this important issue; moreover, council members |
|
organized the collection of money from each classroom and were |
|
responsible for handling the funds; at the end of the project, the |
|
students had far exceeded their fund-raising goal of $1,000 and had |
|
learned a valuable lesson in hands-on charitable work; and |
|
WHEREAS, Having demonstrated leadership, compassion, and an |
|
eagerness to make a difference through their involvement in a |
|
worthy cause, the members of the student council have dedicated |
|
much time and energy to helping others, and they may indeed reflect |
|
with pride on their efforts; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor the members of the Gardens Elementary |
|
School student council and their advisor, Andrea Luna, for their |
|
work in behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pennies for |
|
Patients fund-raiser and extend to them best wishes for continued |
|
success in all their endeavors; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the students as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
