R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Residents of West Texas came together on April 20,
  2007, for the 42nd Annual Armed Forces Barbecue in Abilene; and
         WHEREAS, This singular event, hosted by the Abilene Chamber
  of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, is given to honor the
  service of all area active duty, reserve, and national guard
  military personnel; the event also pays tribute to one deserving
  family with the presentation of the Dyess Family of the Year award,
  which is given for outstanding community service; and
         WHEREAS, Originally held at the Dyess Air Force Base picnic
  grounds, the barbecue has been held at the Abilene Civic Center now
  for over 30 years; in the past year alone, 3,300 pounds of beef, 600
  pounds of sausage style beans, 50 gallons of sauce, and 1,000 pounds
  of coleslaw were used to make 4,500 meals, including several
  hundred plates that were delivered to on-duty personnel; and
         WHEREAS, Former Abilene mayor Fred Lee Hughes chaired the
  Armed Forces Barbecue before passing the torch to Bob Deegan, who
  oversaw this worthwhile endeavor for more than 20 years; in 1999,
  Rob Barnhill assumed the role, and under his leadership, the
  military affairs committee has expanded its honoree base to include
  Department of Defense civilians; and
         WHEREAS, For more than four decades, the Armed Forces
  Barbecue has paid tribute to the stalwart service of our brave men
  and women in uniform, while providing an exciting and enjoyable
  occasion for all those in attendance; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 42nd Annual Armed Forces
  Barbecue and commend the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military
  Affairs Committee for its efforts in behalf of military personnel;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the event's organizers as an expression of high regard
  by the Texas House of Representatives.
