R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A beloved country music entertainer who emerged from |
|
North Texas to achieve national stardom, Johnny Duncan passed away |
|
on August 14, 2006; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born and raised in the Dublin area, Johnny Duncan |
|
was influenced by his mother and the many other musically inclined |
|
members of his family and began performing in public as a teenager; |
|
intent on a career in country music, he moved to Nashville, |
|
Tennessee, and supported himself by working in construction and as |
|
a radio personality while gaining attention as a songwriter and |
|
performer; and |
|
WHEREAS, After landing a record contract, his first single |
|
appeared in 1967; his greatest success came in the 1970s, when he |
|
teamed with famed producer Billy Sherrill, who found the ideal way |
|
to showcase Mr. Duncan's smooth baritone voice; hits such as "Sweet |
|
Country Woman," "Thinkin' of a Rendezvous," "Slow Dancing," and his |
|
most popular song, "She Can Put Her Shoes Under My Bed Anytime," |
|
made Johnny Duncan a star; and |
|
WHEREAS, He also enjoyed success in his duets with Dallas |
|
native Janie Fricke, and the two were nominated as Vocal Duo of the |
|
Year by the Country Music Association for three consecutive years; |
|
over the course of his career, Johnny Duncan placed 39 songs on the |
|
charts, with four of his singles going all the way to number one; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, After the whirlwind of show-business stardom, |
|
Johnny Duncan chose to step out of the spotlight in the early 1980s |
|
to focus on raising his family; he returned to the Lone Star State |
|
during this period, where he continued to perform concerts on a |
|
regular basis; he also undertook various recording projects and |
|
released his most recent album in 2004; and |
|
WHEREAS, While enchanting audiences over the course of four |
|
decades as a talented musician and performer, Johnny Duncan also |
|
excelled in his roles as a husband, father, and grandfather, and |
|
memories of his caring nature and his immense musical talent will |
|
continue to gladden the hearts of all who knew him; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Johnny Duncan and |
|
extend condolences to his family, his friends, and his many fans; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Johnny |
|
Duncan. |
