R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. James O. Standley has served as a dean at Stephen
  F. Austin State University for 28 years, making him the
  longest-serving academic dean in the State of Texas; and
         WHEREAS, A 1965 graduate of SFA with a bachelor's degree in
  sociology and psychology, Dr. Standley earned his master's degree
  in criminology from Sam Houston State University in 1968 and his
  doctorate in sociology in 1973 from Texas A&M University, which
  recently recognized him as an outstanding graduate; moreover, Dr.
  Standley is an alumnus of the Institute for Management and
  Leadership in Education at Harvard; and
         WHEREAS, In 1972, he became an assistant professor of
  sociology at Texas State University, where he was recognized with a
  University Teaching Excellence Award; four years later, he was
  appointed chair of the school's Department of Criminal Justice; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Standley was hired by Stephen F. Austin State
  University in 1979 to establish and direct the new College of
  Applied Arts and Sciences; to that end, he successfully
  consolidated several programs, including communications, criminal
  justice, military science, and social work, under the heading of
  the new college; and
         WHEREAS, Briefly serving as interim dean of the College of
  Fine Arts, he played an instrumental role in the renovation of the
  music building and demonstrated his commitment to the student body
  by attending every senior recital of the music department; and
         WHEREAS, In 2005, after serving as an academic dean for more
  than 25 years, Dr. Standley was preparing to return to teaching when
  the university asked him to oversee the merging of the College of
  Applied Arts and Sciences with the College of Liberal Arts, a
  project he has recently completed; currently serving as the dean of
  the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, he has overseen four
  colleges at SFA over the years; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to being an indispensable member of the
  administration at SFA, Dr. Standley has also contributed to other
  universities as a speaker and consultant, sharing his vast
  experience in such topics as strategic planning, faculty
  development, and program assessment; he is active as well in his
  community, serving as a school board member, a division chair of the
  United Way, and a district chair of the Boy Scouts of America; and
         WHEREAS, In his long and productive career, this dynamic and
  innovative administrator has contributed immeasurably to higher
  education in the State of Texas, and SFA continues to benefit from
  his deep commitment to the school; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Dr. James O. Standley for nearly three
  decades of service as an academic dean at Stephen F. Austin State
  University and extend to him best wishes for continued success;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Standley as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
