| WHEREAS, After 56 years of dedicated service with American | ||
| Amicable Life Insurance Company in Waco, Helen Rose Quiram is | ||
| retiring on May 18, 2007, concluding a remarkable tenure | ||
| characterized by great accomplishment; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Ms. Quiram began her employment at American Amicable | ||
| on February 8, 1951, as a messenger/mail clerk, and her career has | ||
| seen steady advancement over the course of more than five decades; | ||
| after being promoted to file clerk, she went on to work in the | ||
| accounting and data processing departments before accepting a | ||
| position in special projects; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This esteemed woman served as executive secretary to | ||
| senior vice president of finance Thomas B. Westbrook for more than | ||
| 30 years and was named as the company's real estate coordinator and | ||
| leasing agent after Mr. Westbrook's retirement; she earned a real | ||
| estate license in order to perform the duties related to that job, | ||
| and she continued in that role until her retirement; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Notably, Ms. Quiram was working in the ALICO | ||
| Building on May 11, 1953, when a devastating tornado touched down | ||
| and destroyed much of the downtown Waco area surrounding the | ||
| building; that disaster caused the deaths of 114 people and injured | ||
| more than 500, and Helen Quiram subsequently took on the role of | ||
| historian in an effort to aid individuals researching that terrible | ||
| day in Waco's history; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A longtime leader of the Altrusa International Club | ||
| of Waco and a devoted member of the Republican Party, Helen Quiram | ||
| served the McLennan County Republican Party as secretary for 12 | ||
| years and as vice chair for eight years; in addition to serving as | ||
| the party election coordinator for many years, she represented | ||
| Senate District 22 as a member of the State Republican Executive | ||
| Committee and was elected as presidential elector for the state of | ||
| Texas in 2000; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Ms. Quiram served with distinction on the Texas | ||
| Cosmetology Commission after her appointment by Texas Governor | ||
| George W. Bush; moreover, the Texas Federation of Republican Women | ||
| honored her with the special TFRW Tribute to Women Recognition, and | ||
| she was the cochair of the largest TFRW State Convention in the | ||
| organization's history; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Through her work and through her political activism, | ||
| Helen Quiram has made a positive difference in the lives of | ||
| countless people, and her legacy of achievement will resonate for | ||
| years to come; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby congratulate Helen Rose Quiram on the occasion | ||
| of her retirement from American Amicable Life Insurance Company and | ||
| commend her for her longtime service to the Republican Party; and, | ||
| be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Ms. Quiram as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
| House of Representatives. | ||
