R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, After five years of hard work by administrators and
  faculty of Martin Middle School in Austin, the campus has attained
  the status of IB World School and is authorized to offer the
  prestigious International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme
  beginning in the 2007-2008 school year; and
         WHEREAS, Developed by the International Baccalaureate
  Organization, the program emphasizes critical thinking, holistic
  learning, intercultural awareness, and social development through
  a unique curriculum based on five "areas of interaction":
  approaches to learning, community service, health and social
  education, environment, and homo faber, which explores questions of
  human creativity; students must complete a minimum of 10 hours of
  community service and, in their final year, a personal project that
  represents a culmination of their learning; through it all, they
  are guided by IB teachers, who receive specialized training and
  participate in ongoing professional development; and
         WHEREAS, Martin Middle School is only the second campus in
  Central Texas to offer the IB Middle Years Programme, which
  continues at participating high schools as the IB Diploma
  Programme; under the direction of Principal Raffy Garza-Vizcaino,
  the school implemented the trial program a number of years ago and
  some 150 students are expected to receive the IB certificate in
  2008; and
         WHEREAS, The dedicated leaders of Martin Middle School have
  achieved a noteworthy goal in behalf of the school's current and
  future students, and they may take justifiable pride in their
  sustained and steadfast efforts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Martin Middle School on being
  authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years
  Programme and commend its administrators and faculty on their
  impressive work; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Martin Middle School as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
