R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Matthew Hernandez of McAllen has earned the
  distinction of being named the 2007 valedictorian at Edinburg North
  High School, and for achieving this auspicious honor, he is truly
  deserving of special recognition; and
         WHEREAS, Earning the title of valedictorian requires not only
  intellect and aptitude, but four years of dedication to the highest
  academic standards; the student who garners this coveted
  distinction must demonstrate a thorough understanding of a wide
  range of subjects, from math and science to language arts and social
  studies, yet the rewards of the countless hours of study and
  preparation are myriad; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to his impressive academic
  achievements, Mr. Hernandez demonstrated athletic excellence as a
  member of the varsity tennis team, and he also distinguished
  himself through his participation in UIL math, number sense,
  calculator, and science competitions; a member of the National
  Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, he completed 120 hours of research
  through a science internship at The University of Texas, and he
  plans to pursue a double major in biology and chemistry; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Hernandez shared his time and talents with his
  young students as a number sense and math coach at Norma Linda
  Trevino Elementary School and as an assistant at a summer chemistry
  camp for fifth and sixth graders; moreover, as a student council
  member, he helped lead efforts to raise money for victims of
  Hurricane Katrina; and
         WHEREAS, A source of tremendous pride to his mother and
  stepfather, Juanita and Paul Quintero, Matthew Hernandez possesses
  a stellar work ethic and a determination to succeed, and he may
  indeed look with anticipation and optimism toward a bright and
  promising future; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Matthew Hernandez on being named
  valedictorian of the Edinburg North High School Class of 2007 and
  extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in all his
  endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Hernandez as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
