R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, On April 28, 2007, the Cherice Cochrane Mentoring |
|
For Success Foundation, of Bexar County, hosted its fifth National |
|
Mentoring Banquet; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mentoring is highly important for the youth of our |
|
state, as studies have shown that students with mentors make better |
|
grades, have improved relationships with adults and peers, and are |
|
less likely to use drugs; worthy organizations like the Cherice |
|
Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation are instrumental in |
|
elevating student achievement and self-esteem; and |
|
WHEREAS, Cherice Cochrane, who tragically lost her life to |
|
meningitis at the age of 19, was the inspiration for the foundation; |
|
this altruistic young woman was committed to helping the children |
|
in her community accomplish their educational goals, and her |
|
unselfish works stand as an inspiring example to all Texans; and |
|
WHEREAS, At the age of 12, Ms. Cochrane helped to implement an |
|
NAACP Back-to-School, Stay-in-School program, which aims to |
|
increase the number of African American youth graduating from high |
|
school by providing children with mentoring, tutoring, and |
|
extracurricular activities; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Cherice Cochrane Mentoring For Success |
|
Foundation carries on the vision of Ms. Cochrane, providing mentors |
|
to children in need of guidance, awarding scholarships to deserving |
|
students, and offering internships, college preparation, and |
|
counseling; and |
|
WHEREAS, The academic success of our youth impacts our |
|
communities, our state, and our nation; it is essential that |
|
students be equipped with the tools necessary to attain their |
|
goals, and mentoring programs play an important role in this |
|
endeavor; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend all those associated with the Cherice |
|
Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation for their efforts in |
|
behalf of the children of San Antonio and the surrounding area; and, |
|
be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Cherice Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation |
|
as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
|
Representatives. |
