R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, On April 28, 2007, the Cherice Cochrane Mentoring
  For Success Foundation, of Bexar County, hosted its fifth National
  Mentoring Banquet; and
         WHEREAS, Mentoring is highly important for the youth of our
  state, as studies have shown that students with mentors make better
  grades, have improved relationships with adults and peers, and are
  less likely to use drugs; worthy organizations like the Cherice
  Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation are instrumental in
  elevating student achievement and self-esteem; and
         WHEREAS, Cherice Cochrane, who tragically lost her life to
  meningitis at the age of 19, was the inspiration for the foundation;
  this altruistic young woman was committed to helping the children
  in her community accomplish their educational goals, and her
  unselfish works stand as an inspiring example to all Texans; and
         WHEREAS, At the age of 12, Ms. Cochrane helped to implement an
  NAACP Back-to-School, Stay-in-School program, which aims to
  increase the number of African American youth graduating from high
  school by providing children with mentoring, tutoring, and
  extracurricular activities; and
         WHEREAS, The Cherice Cochrane Mentoring For Success
  Foundation carries on the vision of Ms. Cochrane, providing mentors
  to children in need of guidance, awarding scholarships to deserving
  students, and offering internships, college preparation, and
  counseling; and
         WHEREAS, The academic success of our youth impacts our
  communities, our state, and our nation; it is essential that
  students be equipped with the tools necessary to attain their
  goals, and mentoring programs play an important role in this
  endeavor; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend all those associated with the Cherice
  Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation for their efforts in
  behalf of the children of San Antonio and the surrounding area; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Cherice Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation
  as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
  Representatives.
