R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with many joyful moments
  and meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends
  of Loraine Beatrice Sprott Whittier of San Antonio, who passed away
  on January 30, 2007, at the age of 93; and
         WHEREAS, A native of the Lone Star State, Mrs. Whittier was
  born and raised in Beaumont; she earned her bachelor's degree from
  Prairie View A&M University and went on to pursue graduate studies
  at St. Mary's University and the University of Wisconsin; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Whittier dedicated her life to education; this
  respected teacher introduced the pleasures of learning to
  generations of students at Dorie Miller Elementary School and
  Hillcrest Elementary School in San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to her professional career, Mrs.
  Whittier immersed herself in volunteer work; a valued member of the
  National Council of Negro Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and
  Jack & Jill of America, she further gave of her time to programs
  that worked to meet the needs of the less fortunate; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Whittier was also devoted to her family; she
  enjoyed many years with her husband, Dr. Oncy Melvin Whittier,
  before his passing in 1981, and she was a constant source of
  strength to her three children and four grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Truly engaged in her community, Loraine Whittier
  made it her mission to serve others, and her work as an educator and
  as a civic leader demonstrated her exceptional generosity and
  warmth; she will be deeply missed by all those who were privileged
  to know her, and she will long be remembered for the many
  contributions she made to her students and to her fellow Texans;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Loraine Beatrice
  Sprott Whittier and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her
  family: to her children, Cheryl L. Streeter, Julius E. Whittier,
  and Mildred E. Whittier; to her grandson and three granddaughters;
  to her brother, Oliver Sprott; to her sister, Myrtle Deplanter; and
  to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Loraine
  Beatrice Sprott Whittier.
