R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful moments and
  meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends of
  John Etta Brent Slaughter of San Antonio, who passed away on August
  30, 2006; and
         WHEREAS, Born on November 3, 1929, this Beaumont native
  graduated from I. M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth and went on
  to attend the prestigious Howard University, where she earned her
  bachelor's and master's degrees; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Slaughter dedicated her life to education; she
  taught in the San Antonio Independent School District for 11 years
  and subsequently embarked on a distinguished career at St. Philip's
  College, where she served as history professor and chair of the
  social sciences department; under her able leadership, the
  institution developed programs and projects in the humanities,
  urban studies, geography, and world civilization studies; and
         WHEREAS, Selected as president of the Faculty Senate and
  chair of the Black Heritage Committee, Mrs. Slaughter sponsored
  numerous cultural activities on campus; her outstanding efforts at
  St. Philip's earned her the Master Teacher Award from the National
  Institute for Staff and Organizational Development and the
  Teacher's Excellence Award from both The University of Texas and
  St. Philip's College; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to her professional career, Mrs.
  Slaughter immersed herself in volunteer work, holding leadership
  positions with such organizations as the San Antonio Alumnae
  Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Boys and Girls Club of
  San Antonio, Pals Club, San Antonio NAACP, and the Progressive
  Women's Club; and
         WHEREAS, She further served her fellow citizens through her
  work on a number of county and state boards, including the Bexar
  County Historical Commission and the Psychological Associate
  Advisory Committee to the Texas State Board of Examiners of
  Psychologists; and
         WHEREAS, Truly engaged in her community, John Etta Slaughter
  made it her mission to serve others, and her work as an educator and
  as a civic leader demonstrated her exceptional generosity, warmth,
  and passion for excellence; she will be deeply missed by all those
  who were privileged to know her, and she will long be remembered for
  the extraordinary contributions she made to the Alamo City; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of John Etta
  Brent Slaughter and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her
  family: to her husband of 54 years, Murray Slaughter; to her
  daughters, Jo Anne Slaughter Brunson and her husband, Colonel
  (Retired) Albert Brunson, and Beverly Slaughter Ross and her
  husband, the Honorable Maurice Ross; to her grandchildren, Captain
  Jordan Brunson, D.D.S., Evan Brunson, Brent Brunson, Jeffrey Ross,
  and Kimberly Ross; to her nephew, Roy Gray; and to her other
  relatives and many friends and admirers; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Etta
  Brent Slaughter.
