R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Theater students at Edcouch-Elsa High School were
  named first runner-up in the 2007 4-A UIL One-Act Play State
  Contest; and
         WHEREAS, Founded in 1927, the University Interscholastic
  League One-Act Play Contest is the largest high school play
  production contest or play festival in the world with more than
  14,000 Texas high school students participating; and
         WHEREAS, Under the skillful direction of Jesse Esquierdo,
  Jr., cast and crew members practiced every school day for five
  months, even giving up their spring break and Easter vacations;
  they went on to successfully compete in four rounds before making it
  to the stage of the Bass Concert Hall in Austin, where they
  impressed judges with their outstanding performance of Mariner by
  Don Nigro; earning second place out of seven, the team became the
  first in school history to finish in the top two in a state event;
  and
         WHEREAS, Cast members included Jacob Layton, who was named to
  the all-star cast, Stephanie de la Cruz and Hope Cantu, both of whom
  were named to the honorable mention all-star cast, Orlando Medrano,
  Crystal Martinez, Julian Herrera, Maricruz Mendez, Jannette Aza,
  Lucas Rodriguez, Adrian Castellanos, Arielle Caraveo, Paul Chavez,
  Juan Garcia, Ben Ozuna, and Thomas Arce, and crew members Celina
  Silva, Maribel Ramirez, Eddie Gonzalez, and Michelle Gonzalez; and
         WHEREAS, These dedicated young people demonstrated
  tremendous commitment, talent, and hard work over the course of
  their studies, and they are a source of great pride to the students,
  teachers, and staff at Edcouch-Elsa High School; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Edcouch-Elsa High School on being
  named first runner-up in the 2007 4-A UIL One-Act Play State Contest
  and extend sincere best wishes to all those involved in this
  noteworthy endeavor; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Edcouch-Elsa High School as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
