R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Margaret Hughes of Houston on
  April 9, 2007, has deeply saddened her family and friends, yet the
  memory of her full and rewarding life remains to comfort them in
  their time of loss; and
         WHEREAS, Born in 1910 in Natick, Massachusetts, Mary Hughes
  graduated from high school in 1927 and earned her teaching
  certificate from Framingham Normal School in 1929; after working as
  a substitute teacher in the Natick area, she was employed at the
  Mary Gilson School, where she taught first and second grades in a
  two-room schoolhouse; she met her future husband, Charles Anthony
  Hughes, Sr., at a dance; they were wed in 1937, and they moved to
  Houston in 1949; a devoted wife and mother, she raised 13 children
  with her husband; and
         WHEREAS, Known for her interest in the history of her adopted
  home state, Mary Hughes was an active member of the Texas State
  Historical Society; in 1999, her children established the Mary M.
  Hughes Research Fellowship in Texas History in honor of her 89th
  birthday and her 50th year as a resident of the Lone Star State; in
  addition, a scholarship was created in her name at Canisius High
  School in Buffalo, New York; and
         WHEREAS, Mary Hughes was an active and vital woman who took
  great joy in traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, and other destinations,
  reading, and following sports; her long and fruitful life was an
  inspiration to her family and to the many friends she made through
  the years, and she will be fondly remembered and deeply missed; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mary Margaret Hughes
  and offer condolences to the members of her family: to her children,
  Charles Hughes, Jr., and his wife, Josephine, Mary Stevens and her
  husband, Dave, Ann Smith and her husband, James, Pat Kirk, Thomas
  Hughes and his wife, Sandra, Joseph Hughes and his wife, Mary,
  Winnie Williamson and her husband, Pat, William Humphrey Hughes and
  his wife, Linda, Therese Palermo and her husband, Tom, Bernie
  Hughes, Ginny Rich and her husband, David Simpson, Josey Reynolds
  and her husband, Craig, and Helen Vandergriff and her husband,
  David; to her 31 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; to her
  siblings, Virginia and John; and to her other relatives and
  friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mary
  Margaret Hughes.
