R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Young participants in the mentoring program of the |
|
Houston chapter of 100 Black Men of America are visiting the State |
|
Capitol on May 21, 2007, to witness the legislative process |
|
firsthand; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded in New York in 1963, 100 Black Men of America |
|
is a service organization dedicated to improving the quality of |
|
life of members of the African American community; since its |
|
establishment, the organization has grown to include 106 chapters |
|
and more than 10,000 members nationwide who work with some 100,000 |
|
young people annually; and |
|
WHEREAS, The group is particularly committed to ensuring the |
|
intellectual, spiritual, and moral development of African American |
|
youth through individual and group mentoring; BMOA members act as |
|
role models, providing goals, life skills, and encouragement for |
|
young people in the program; and |
|
WHEREAS, The BMOA chapter in Houston was founded in 1995 by |
|
Ben Piggot and 12 other charter members; today the organization is |
|
carrying its message of leadership and achievement primarily to |
|
young men between the ages of 11 and 17 under the direction of |
|
current president and vice chancellor of the University of Houston |
|
System, John Rudley; and |
|
WHEREAS, The sure-handed guidance of members of the Houston |
|
chapter of 100 Black Men of America has contributed to the success |
|
and well-being of countless young Texans, and it is a pleasure to |
|
commend those caring individuals and their young charges for their |
|
participation in this worthwhile program and to welcome them to the |
|
State Capitol; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor all those associated with the Houston |
|
chapter of 100 Black Men of America and commend them for their |
|
interest in state government; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Houston chapter of 100 Black Men of America as an |
|
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
