R E S O L U T I O N
       WHEREAS, The members of the Carthage Book Club are
celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of their
organization in 2007; and
       WHEREAS, Thought to be the oldest civic club in Panola
County, the Carthage Book Club has supported numerous important
community projects through the years; its members' efforts have
resulted in the construction of the county's first permanent
sidewalk in 1914, the town's first circulating library in 1920, and
the Anderson Park Gazebo in Carthage Square in 1969; in addition,
the club published the History of Panola County in 1935 and founded
the Panola College Scholarship in 1954, a project that continues to
assist area youth today; and
       WHEREAS, The founding members of the Carthage Book Club were
Mrs. W. D. Anderson, Mrs. A. H. Baker, Mrs. P. W. Baker, Mrs. D. C.
Cariker, Mrs. C. C. Comer, Mrs. J. W. Cooke, Mrs. S. A. Hawthorn,
Mrs. H. T. Hooker, Miss Margie E. Neal, Mrs. Harry Pool, Mrs. N. L.
Walker, and Mrs. J. G. Woolworth; and
       WHEREAS, This venerable organization has contributed greatly
to the quality of life for area residents and to the preservation of
the rich history of this East Texas community, and its continued
existence, a century after its founding, is a testament to the
enthusiasm and commitment of its members, both past and present;
now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
founding of the Carthage Book Club and extend to its members best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Carthage Book Club as an expression of high regard
by the Texas House of Representatives.
