  H.R. No. 2533

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Fighting to Rid Gangs in America Foundation has
been doing valuable work with youth of the Coastal Bend region since
  1995; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing that poverty, drug abuse, teenage
pregnancy, and other social problems may lead young people to gang
membership or other behavioral problems, Corpus Christi attorney
Rene Rodriguez and Justice Nelda V. Rodriguez created the Fighting
to Rid Gangs in America Foundation to provide programs and
structured activities for children at risk; and
WHEREAS, The foundation offers children and indigent
families a safe alternative to the streets through its center on
Mary Street; facilities there include an art room where kids may
express themselves through drawing and painting, a game room with
pool and foosball tables, a computer lab with Internet access
through 11 donated computers, a gymnasium with a full-size boxing
ring and weight room, and a library; and
WHEREAS, The foundation's community outreach programs
include informative and educational presentations aimed at
teaching life skills; topics include diabetes education, gang
awareness, parenting skills, AIDS prevention, and learning to set
goals and build self-esteem; available in both English and Spanish,
these presentations are offered to schools, student clubs, parent
groups, juvenile detention centers, and teacher workshops in
Nueces, Duval, Brooks, Jim Wells, and Kleberg Counties; and
WHEREAS, By providing activities and education for young
people in need, the Fighting to Rid Gangs in America Foundation is
making an invaluable contribution to the health, welfare, and

fitting that the organization be recognized for its many good
  works; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the Fighting to Rid Gangs in America
Foundation of Corpus Christi for its service to the community and
