R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Fighting to Rid Gangs in America Foundation has |
|
been doing valuable work with youth of the Coastal Bend region since |
|
1995; and |
|
WHEREAS, Recognizing that poverty, drug abuse, teenage |
|
pregnancy, and other social problems may lead young people to gang |
|
membership or other behavioral problems, Corpus Christi attorney |
|
Rene Rodriguez and Justice Nelda V. Rodriguez created the Fighting |
|
to Rid Gangs in America Foundation to provide programs and |
|
structured activities for children at risk; and |
|
WHEREAS, The foundation offers children and indigent |
|
families a safe alternative to the streets through its center on |
|
Mary Street; facilities there include an art room where kids may |
|
express themselves through drawing and painting, a game room with |
|
pool and foosball tables, a computer lab with Internet access |
|
through 11 donated computers, a gymnasium with a full-size boxing |
|
ring and weight room, and a library; and |
|
WHEREAS, The foundation's community outreach programs |
|
include informative and educational presentations aimed at |
|
teaching life skills; topics include diabetes education, gang |
|
awareness, parenting skills, AIDS prevention, and learning to set |
|
goals and build self-esteem; available in both English and Spanish, |
|
these presentations are offered to schools, student clubs, parent |
|
groups, juvenile detention centers, and teacher workshops in |
|
Nueces, Duval, Brooks, Jim Wells, and Kleberg Counties; and |
|
WHEREAS, By providing activities and education for young |
|
people in need, the Fighting to Rid Gangs in America Foundation is |
|
making an invaluable contribution to the health, welfare, and |
|
safety of citizens of the Coastal Bend community, and it is most |
|
fitting that the organization be recognized for its many good |
|
works; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend the Fighting to Rid Gangs in America |
|
Foundation of Corpus Christi for its service to the community and |
|
extend to its staff and volunteers best wishes for continued |
|
success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the foundation as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
