R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Shirley Burks Howard is retiring from the Houston |
|
Independent School District on May 23, 2007, concluding more than |
|
three decades of exemplary service to the teaching profession; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Ms. Howard earned |
|
a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Grambling State |
|
University and went on to earn a master's degree from Texas Southern |
|
University; she spent the first half of her career as a special |
|
education teacher for North Forest ISD and most recently served as a |
|
life skills teacher for Ethel R. Coop Elementary School in Houston; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Active in her community, Ms. Howard is a member of |
|
the NAACP, the National Women of Achievement--Houston Chapter, the |
|
Council of Exceptional Children, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the |
|
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; moreover, she serves as a board member |
|
of the Ensemble Theatre and the Houston Area Alliance of Black |
|
School Educators, and she is an enthusiastic supporter of the |
|
Rosewood Civic Club; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Howard has enjoyed nearly 45 years of marriage |
|
to her husband, Lester Howard, and she takes great pride in her |
|
children, Jacqueline Peevy and Lester D. Howard, and her five |
|
grandchildren, Brandon, Jayden, Marque, Devoris, and Cameron; she |
|
is a valued congregant of Bethany Baptist Church, where she shares |
|
her time and talents with the mission board and the mission choir; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Shirley Burks Howard has earned a special place in |
|
the hearts of many students, parents, and colleagues through the |
|
years, and it is indeed fitting to recognize her outstanding tenure |
|
and the lasting contributions she has made to the lives of countless |
|
young Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Shirley Burks Howard on the |
|
occasion of her retirement from the Houston Independent School |
|
District and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success and happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Howard as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
