R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Roberto Gonzalez of Falfurrias has been featured by
  the National Hispanic Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his
  remarkable career as a high school and collegiate athlete; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Gonzalez excelled in track and cross-country as
  a student at Falfurrias High School; he was especially impressive
  at running the mile, winning that event at the University
  Interscholastic League Class 3A state meet for four consecutive
  years and setting a national freshman record and establishing state
  records for his grade level during his sophomore, junior, and
  senior years; notably, his time of 4 minutes, 7.4 seconds, which he
  set as a senior, remained the state meet record in the mile until
  1980, when the UIL switched to distances measured in meters; and
         WHEREAS, Named to the All-State team each year of high
  school, Mr. Gonzalez was a high school All-American in 1966 and
  1967; he won 37 of the 43 mile events that he entered as a high
  school student, including a remarkable 31 in a row, and set 32 meet
  records during his career; he also won the individual state
  cross-country title as a sophomore, junior, and senior and led the
  Falfurrias High School cross-country team to state titles in 1965
  and 1966; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Gonzalez continued his education and his
  athletic career as a student-athlete at Texas A&I University in
  Kingsville, where he starred on the track team and earned
  bachelor's and master's degrees; he led the Javelinas to the Lone
  Star Conference championship in 1969, winning the LSC title in the
  880 and the mile, and helped secure the 1970 conference title as
  well; named to the All-LSC team for four consecutive years, he was
  inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 1981; and
         WHEREAS, Opting for a career in education, Mr. Gonzalez
  became the coach of the Falfurrias High School track team in 1972
  and served in that capacity until moving into school administration
  in the mid-1980s; he is now the superintendent of the charter school
  in Encino; and
         WHEREAS, An inspiration to countless friends and fans,
  Roberto Gonzalez has demonstrated a commitment to excellence as an
  athlete, student, and educator, and it is a pleasure to honor this
  noteworthy gentleman at this time; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize Roberto Gonzalez on his memorable
  achievements as a high school and collegiate athlete and commend
  him for his longtime commitment to educating the young people of
  Texas; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Gonzalez as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
