R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel William M. Pina is retiring from
  the Texas Army National Guard in June 2007, bringing to a close a
  distinguished military career that has spanned four decades; and
         WHEREAS, This dedicated officer joined the U.S. Navy in May
  1967 and served a tour in Vietnam, where he was wounded in action;
  he went on to join the U.S. Navy Reserve before beginning his tenure
  with the Texas Army National Guard on April 18, 1978; and
         WHEREAS, Commissioned from the State OCS program in 1979,
  Lieutenant Colonel Pina has served in a number of positions with the
  49th Armor Division through the years, including company executive
  officer, C-E staff officer, battalion motor officer, company
  commander, assistant S-3, HHC company commander of the 1st and 36th
  Brigades, and platoon leader of Task Force Texas Exercise AHAUS
  TARA III in Honduras; and
         WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Pina subsequently served as the
  mobilization exercise officer in the Plans, Operations, and
  Training Section of the State Area Command and the GI of the 71st
  Troop Command, later bringing his expertise to the positions of
  deputy commander for training and doctrine, 136th RTI (FWD)
  Training Assistance Group III, Coalition Joint Task Force Phoenix
  in Afghanistan in 2004 and 2005; currently, he serves as the chief
  of the Storage and Distribution Branch, J-8 Joint Force
  Headquarters; and
         WHEREAS, A highly decorated officer, Lieutenant Colonel Pina
  has earned a number of prestigious military awards, including the
  Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal,
  Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" Device, and National
  Defense Medal, to name but a few; and
         WHEREAS, Throughout his accomplished military career,
  William M. Pina has proven himself a leader of incomparable skill
  and impeccable judgment, and his inspired performance as a member
  of the Texas Army National Guard is worthy of the highest praise;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Lieutenant Colonel William M. Pina
  on the occasion of his retirement from the Texas Army National Guard
  and extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Lieutenant Colonel Pina as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
