R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The passing of Israel Louis Schwartz on March 18,
  2007, at the age of 81, has deeply saddened the family and friends
  of this beloved gentleman; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Havana, Cuba, to Clara Bulbe Schwartz and
  Joseph Schwartz on March 25, 1925, Lou Schwartz grew up in Galveston
  and attended Galveston public schools; he played football for Ball
  High School and graduated with honors two years ahead of his class;
  and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Schwartz enrolled at Texas A&M University but
  enlisted in the U.S. Navy before completing his degree; during boot
  camp he was chosen to attend Northwestern University Officer
  Candidate School, and he was subsequently commissioned as an
  ensign; he later studied at the Massachusetts Institute of
  Technology, where he received a degree in electrical engineering,
  with a major in naval electronics; and
         WHEREAS, Among the various assignments Mr. Schwartz held
  during World War II was that of airborne radar observer; he later
  served on the aircraft carrier USS Palau and, for a period that
  included the Korean War, on the battleship USS Missouri; after 11
  years in the navy, he was discharged with the rank of lieutenant
  junior grade; and
         WHEREAS, In 1979, after working for 17 years in the
  military-aerospace industry, Mr. Schwartz moved to Austin, where
  he joined the office of the state comptroller; following his
  retirement he moved to Houston, and for the last nine years of his
  life he resided in the vicinity of Clear Lake; and
         WHEREAS, Lou Schwartz married the former Audrey Hurwitz, whom
  he had met at MIT, in 1949, and the couple became the proud parents
  of three children; and
         WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Mr. Schwartz
  and to have shared in his love and friendship can take pride in his
  legacy of purposeful endeavor, and they will forever hold him close
  in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Israel Louis Schwartz
  and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
  children, Ellen Schwartz and her husband, Leonard Cox, Paul
  Schwartz and his wife, Jan, and Nancy Schwartz and her companion,
  Brian Fisher; to his grandchildren, Andrea and Stefan Schwartz; to
  his brothers, the Honorable A. R. "Babe" Schwartz and his wife,
  Marilyn, and Steven Schwartz and his wife, Lisa; to his sister,
  Phyllis Milstein and her husband, Dr. Bernard Milstein; to his
  brother-in-law, Joseph Hurwitz and his wife, Sandy; and to his many
  other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lou
  Schwartz.
